In the unlikely event of a fire in the CMS underground experimental cavern (UXC55), fire retarding foam will be distributed from dispensers attached to the roof. The system is designed to fill the cavern with foam in under seven minutes, but before this time is reached the foam will have suffocated the fire beneath. The system was tested successfully on friday 12th May, filling the cavern with about 30cm. The foam dissolved down the drains in a couple of hours.
